POSEIDON Project Advances: Exploring digitization initiatives in support to the fight against corruption in ports through Study Visits and Thematic Dialogues

Posted on February 7, 2024

On January 17, the POSEIDON Project held its third Study Visit to the Port of Algeciras, where it was possible to gain a better understanding of the security measures and functionalities within the port. In particular, participants had the occasion to visit the APM container terminal, the Border Control Point, the CSI Inspection Scanner Equipment and TTIA container terminals.

The study visit was also followed by a conference session which was opened by Gerardo Landaluce, Chairman APBA and Manuel Sanchez de Alcazar, Chief of Port Protection Department APBA to present the structure and facilities of the Port of Algeciras. The study visit briefing represented a fruitful opportunity to gain deeper awareness fof the challenges and good practices in countering corruption by LEAs representative, such as Guardia Civil, Spanish National Police and Customs.

Following the Study Visit, on January 18, POSEIDON partners gathered for the project’s second Thematic Dialogue on compliance sysstems and digitisation to support the fight against corruption in ports.

About 30 participants, including representatives from the port authorities of Algeciras, Cartagena, and Antwerp-Bruges had the opportunity to discuss integrity policies and compliance procedures related to port system security. In addition, the event was attended by the Managing Director of the APBA.

Following some experiences provided by the Ports of Algeciras and Cartagena representatives on their compliance and integrity standard measures, thematic dialogue sessions proceeded with relevant insights and fruitful discussions on how digitisation processes and integrity policies can effectively respond to threats of corruption and organised crime activities in the port system.

Thanks to the feedback and finding collected through these events, the POSEIDON project is moving forward with its goal of raising awareness of the issues related to corruption in the port system and potential solutions to address them.
