The POSEIDON project, funded by the European Commission, has made remarkable progress this year in its mission to combat corruption within European seaports. This initiative continues to drive innovation, collaboration, and impactful solutions to ensure transparency and integrity in maritime operations.
Key Achievements in 2023
Expansion of the EU Public-Private Port Stakeholder Network
The POSEIDON project has successfully fostered the growth of a robust public-private stakeholder network comprising over 80 members. This network includes port authorities, law enforcement agencies (LEAs), and both public and private entities. Together, these stakeholders engage in open dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of best practices, all aimed at tackling corruption in seaport operations.
Study Visits to Supporting Ports
In a concerted effort to gather insights and promote knowledge exchange, six comprehensive study visits were conducted at the project’s supporting ports:
- Algeciras
- Rotterdam
- Piraeus
- Antwerp-Bruges
- Cartagena
- Venice
These visits offered invaluable opportunities to analyze specific challenges and identify actionable solutions tailored to the unique dynamics of each port.
Thematic Dialogues on Corruption
The project organized five thematic dialogues, serving as critical platforms for discussion among diverse stakeholders. These dialogues focused on specialized topics related to corruption in seaports, fostering cross-sector engagement and the development of targeted strategies to address key vulnerabilities.
Comprehensive Study on Corruption Vulnerabilities
One of the most significant milestones achieved this year was the completion of a landmark study examining corruption vulnerabilities within the EU seaports’ supply chain. This study provides an in-depth analysis of systemic risks and offers actionable recommendations to strengthen safeguards across maritime operations.
Looking Ahead: Promoting Unified Action Against Corruption
While these achievements mark significant progress, the work of the POSEIDON project is far from over. The next phase focuses on promoting coordinated and unified actions against corruption across major EU ports. By building on the solid foundation established this year, the project aims to enhance transparency, strengthen trust, and ensure the highest standards of integrity in the maritime sector.
Together, we are charting a course toward a more transparent and accountable future for European seaports. Stay engaged with the POSEIDON project as we continue this vital mission.
