The POSEIDON project conducted its first study visit to the Piraeus Port in Greece on 28 September 2023.
The event, organized by the Democritus University of Thrace and attended by all consortium partners, saw the participation of Greek public and private port sector stakeholders, including the representatives of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy; the Hellenic Coast Guard; the Independent Authority for Public Revenue; the National Transparency Authority; Piraeus Port Authority and Piraeus Container Terminal. In the spirit of transnational exchange of experiences underpinning POSEIDON, a representative of the Port Authority of Algeciras, Spain, one of the other supporting partners of the project, also attended the meeting.
Throughout the day, stakeholders around the table were able to engage in fruitful discussions and open exchanges on functioning mechanisms of the Piraeus Port, transparency and integrity initiatives and good practice examples of public-private cooperation. Participants also had an opportunity to learn more about the POSEIDON project, and in particular the project’s Private Port Stakeholder Network, which they were all encouraged to join.
The study visit served as a crucial occasion for consortium partners to gather and validate relevant research information as well as identify good practices in the fight against corruption in ports. It was a crucial step towards better comprehending the risks faced by ports and supporting all stakeholders involved in addressing them. Throughout the implementation of project POSEIDON, this assessment will pave the way for the identification and further exploration of good practices in the fight against corruption across EU Member States, and the proposal of a set of recommendations for an EU Port Supply Chain Integrity Standard.
